THE National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has recently re-introduced an amnesty period on interest for payment of contributions for the period December 2019 to August 15, 2020, due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
The extended deadline for payment of contributions without interest is September 30, 2020.
According to a release issued, Employers and self-employed persons who have existing agreements to pay outstanding contributions with the National Insurance Scheme’s Debt Recovery Unit are not entitled to the waiver of interest.
This is not the first time that amnesty was offered to employers and self- employed persons.
In an earlier release in May of this year, the Insurance body, in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus among the elderly and persons who are in constant contact with the organisation, directly supporting and encouraging social distancing, had introduced a period of amnesty for payment of contributions for the period January to May 15, 2020. A waiver of interest on the amounts owed and the deadline for those payments without interest had been issued.
The above-stated action is part of the Insurance body’s plan to ensure that there is compliance with the precautionary measures advocated by local and international health authorities. Other measures introduced by the insurance body can be found on its website.
