Vendor shot, bandit beaten with spade during robbery

A VENDOR of Free Yard, Port Mourant, is nursing a gunshot injury to her hand after she was shot during an attempted robbery at her home on Thursday evening.

Around 20:10hrs, two armed bandits pounced on the vendor at her Lot 88, Free Yard Port Mourant home demanding cash and jewellery.

Homeowner, Joel Benn, 45, resisted the robbers and one of them fired a shot at his wife, Roshnie Singh, also 45, called “Koreen,” which struck her on the arm.

According to information received, Singh was relaxing in her hammock when the two masked men, one armed with a handgun and the other with a cutlass, entered the house. Her husband who was getting dressed after a shower noticed the men, grabbed a spade nearby and dealt a lash to the bandit who was armed with the cutlass. The blow struck him in the head and his accomplice, who was armed with the gun, retaliated by shooting Singh on the hand.

Realising that the situation was even, the bandits decided to flee the scene empty-handed.

The woman was escorted to the Port Mourant Hospital but was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she is expected to have a surgery to remove the bullet that is lodged in her arm.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that Singh is in a stable condition but remains traumatised. Police visited the scene and found two live .32 rounds; they are hunting the bandits in the foiled robbery.
