Finance Ministry offers concession on student loans

THE Ministry of Finance is offering optional interest deferrals for up to six months for guarantors of student loans.

In a notice on Tuesday, the ministry stated: “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, the Ministry of Finance wishes to let you know that your safety and security are our priority.”

Persons who have challenges meeting their financial obligations at this time have been asked to send an email indicating same to studentloanagency@finance.gov.gy. Persons can also call 2225403/5412/5414/5418 for more information.

At the commissioning of the $26.5M Student Loan Agency back in 2016, Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, had stated that, through the agency, former students of the University of Guyana (UG) can qualify for debt write-offs and waivers on student loans if they satisfy requirements introduced.

Through the agency, loans to study at UG are granted to local students residing in Guyana for 180 continuous days within a calendar year, and must each be the holder of a valid Guyana passport.
