– GPSU urges
THE Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) is mindful that COVID-19 is spread by touching, coughing, and sneezing, and is therefore calling on all its members and the public at large to practise social distancing.
The union, in a release, said it has taken a decision to refrain from any activity which will conflict with this commitment.
COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by the Pan American Health Organisation – World Health Organisation.
“This contagion is so pervasive that almost every country is grappling with its deadly effects. Guyana has thus far recorded 23 positive cases and four deaths. This virus is transmitted primarily by physical contact and its deadly effect is manifested in a matter of days. It is worthy to note that this virus did not originate in Guyana, but rather, it was imported,” the umbrella union body said.
To combat the virus, the government has taken a number of preventative measures including restrictions on air, sea and land transportation, among others, with the objective of reducing the probability of imported cases and making social distancing mandatory.
