DEFENDING champions High Rollers, as well as giants Silver Bullets, Swag Entertainment and Presidential stormed their way into the quarterfinal section when the 2020 season of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Championship kicked off on Friday with the Linden zonal competition at the Silver City tarmac.

THE youthful High Rollers unit defeated NK Ballers 1-0 while Silver Bullets riddled Haynes Hitters with a 4-2 scoreline. Presidential mirrored the aforesaid scoreline, downing Elite Ballers 4-2. Similarly, Swag Entertainment sent a stern warning to the field, brushing aside Barsenal 5-1.

Meanwhile in other results, Retrieve Unknowns blanked Quiet Storm 1-0 on penalty kicks, after regulation time ended 0-0. Similarly, Amelia’s Ward Russians edged Capital Storm 3-2 on sudden-death penalty kicks following a scoreless regulation time interval.

Also, Amazings, last year’s losing finalists, secured victory over Dave & Celina’s via walkover.

According to the Event coordinator Rawle Gittens, “The opening night illustrated the enthusiasm and excitement surrounding the tournament as the fans, who descended on the venue in the traditional large numbers, were treated to quality and exciting action which is certainly going to improve as the tournament progresses.”

At press time, quarterfinal matches were underway.

The other playing nights for the tournament are February 7 (semi-final round) and February 8 (Final). The Berbice Zonal tournament is scheduled to commence after the conclusion of the Linden tournament.

Winners of the event will collect $400 000 and the championship trophy. On the other hand, the runners-up will pocket $150 000 and the respective accolade. Similarly, the third- and fourth-place finishers will receive $100 000 and $75 000 respectively and a trophy.
