COMMANDER of ‘B’ Division, Calvin Brutus, on Sunday, confirmed that one person is in custody in connection with the armed robbery that occurred at Chenick and Son Supermarket at Betsy Ground, East Canje, on Saturday evening.
A Western Union outlet and a Superbet Shop are also housed in the Betsy Ground business establishment.
At approximately 19:34hrs on Saturday, six masked bandits, each armed with a gun, attacked the supermarket while it was open and filled with customers including children. They held the customers at gunpoint while two immediately went to the owner, Doodnauth Moses, 45. Moses was gun butted to his head and had to seek medical attention afterwards.
A 14-year-old relative of Moses, Marvin Ishmael, was also injured and received four stitches to the head. The men were able to cart off a canister containing an undisclosed sum of cash. Two gold rings and earrings were also taken from the owner.
The men were dropped off by a while Toyota Allion. In their bid to escape, the bandits carjacked Moses’ Toyota Verossa, which they later abandoned several villages away. According to reports, the Police responded in a timely manner and was able to give chase minutes after the men departed; however, they were only able to recover the vehicle.
