MAGISTRATE Faith McGusty on Wednesday remanded an 80-year-old Trader to prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Carl Vanrosum of Mocha, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Particulars of the charge stated that, on November 25, 2019, at South Road, he had in his possession one .38 revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Attorney at law Stanley Moore, who is representing Vanrosum in the matter, told the court that his client found the gun in a dump heap and was taking it to the police.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail for Vanrosum. Blackman told the court that on the day in question, the police acting on information went to South Road where they made contact with Vanrosum. Blackman added that Vanrosum had a black plastic bag in his hand and on searching the bag, the police found the firearm. Vanrosum reportedly acknowledged ownership of the firearm, adding that he has had it for some time. Consequently, he was arrested and was later charged.
Magistrate McGusty, after listening to the prosecutor, remanded the father of 10 to prison and adjourned the case to December 11, 2019.
