MINISTER within the Ministry of the Presidency with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Simona Broomes, has urged youths of the Morgan Learning Centre to pay serious attention to their education and dream big.

This admonition was given on Wednesday during a presentation she made at the said school.

Broomes visited the private learning institution to donate books to its library and while there, she took the opportunity to encourage the students to study diligently.
She emphasised that education was the ultimate key to a successful life and noted that the onus was on self to take this journey seriously.

“This is a foundation that you are setting. It’s a wonderful thing to be given an opportunity to do something for yourselves. Nobody can take education for you; you have to get it for yourself. And sometimes it seems so hard and we fight against it but it’s a blessing. Make good use of this opportunity,” Broomes told the packed auditorium of students.
She also said the issue of youths not wanting to work seemed to be a curse and efforts were being made to rid society of this curse.

“When this time is over and you finish with your exams, I wanna encourage you to look forward to working… The reason why I’m preaching education, it’s a message from the President, and I believe in it. So that when you’re ready for the world out there, long gone the day of handouts. I’m moving through the schools because I gotta talk to you, tell you to dream, set your goals and set them high. Because where Guyana is going, we have to be more focused. You have to dream and dream big. Don’t worry with a lot of things. We have to start thinking about fitting in this big vision, this big Guyana,” the minister said.
The students were each given an exercise book, compliments of the Office of the President. They were then told that Guyana is known as the Land of Giants.

Minister Broomes spent the rest of her stay at the school engaging with the students and listening to their concerns. Light moments were shared giving autographs and taking photos, as the students were thrilled at the presence of the minister at their school.
Broomes told Guyana Chronicle that since her portfolio is youth affairs, it is only fitting that she engages the youths across the board, starting from the school level.

“If I deal with youth affairs then their affair is my affair. And if I don’t come here to hear what are their affairs, then my affairs will be wrong. I then will be pushing my own agenda and not their agenda. So it is important that I come to meet with them,” she said.
Over the past couple of months since the new post was assigned to Broomes, youths across the country have been engaged. It was also observed that every school the minister visits, she dresses in their uniform colour to make the students feel as though she was a part of them.

Broomes promised to continue putting the best interest of the country’s youth at heart and to ensure that she continuously encourages and motivates them to be assets to the country.
