WITH the proceeds from oil and gas scheduled to come to Guyana shortly, Minister of Public Service, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley has implored residents of Kari Kari to submit their proposals to the government so that implementation can begin in 2020.

“Think outside of the box. More resources will be made available to each village, each community, each Region,” Minister Sarabo-Halley stated.

Concerning the proposals that the residents agreed to submit to the government, Minister Sarabo-Halley said she is amenable to the idea as it is the people at the grassroots level that are most connected and directly affected by community development projects.

“Instead of all the ideas coming from the top down, it is better if you can approach us with infrastructure ideas and social ideas. You have a lot of young people in the community. Everybody may not be academically inclined. What are their interests? What programmes should be implemented in Karia Karia to ensure that the skills of young people properly utilised?”

The Public Service Minister urged the residents of the 280-strong community to craft a plan of the direction they would like to see Kari Kari go as development continues under the Coalition Government.

A community known mainly for logging, the minister encouraged the residents of Kari Kari to branch out into other sectors to increase employment and to sustainably provide for their households.

Kari Kari has unused land. With this in mind, the residents were sensitised on the viability of agriculture, and the excellent opportunities it presents.

Kari Kari is located an approximate 40-minute boat ride away from Parika, and forms part of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara). The Public Service Minister was accompanied by Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, who met with residents of the community on Sunday. (DPI)
