GPL promises consumers wonderful Christmas

THE Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company is promising consumers that this Christmas they will experience a service that is second to none.

“We have over the years been working to ensure we provide our valued customers reliable services, and this year is no different,” GPL Public Relations Office, Shevion Sears told the Guyana Chronicle on Friday.

She made reference to the measures which were put in place over the last few months by the company, including the repairing of the submarine cable, as well as the capital works in Berbice and Essequibo.

The latter saw the commissioning of two new power plants, which have effectively provided sufficient power generation capacity for the Demerara-Berbice interconnected system.

“So we foresee that our customers will have a wonderful Christmas, because we know during that period that everyone is excited and they are looking forward to have the lights, both business and residential properties alike. And so we have more than the available capacity, and we guarantee reliable service to our customers,” Sears said.

Meanwhile, as it relates to the planned and scheduled load shedding for Thursday and Friday across several communities, Sears said the company has managed to get things under control. In fact, it was able to prevent load shedding on Thursday. According to Sears, the company managed to put several systems in place to prevent the occurrence.

She stressed that even at the peak period of 119MW on Friday, GPL was still able to provide uninterrupted power supply, and is likely to maintain this trend over the next few days.

The Guyana Chronicle was told that outages were scheduled due to the late delivery of fuel from the regular overseas supplier, and it was projected in-house that there would need to be load shedding in order to prevent a total shutdown.

GPL’s fuel delivery is expected to arrive in the country today, and will begin offloading on Sunday, according to the company.
