‘Dangerous driving’ accused released on bail

SIX months after an 18-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run accident, a 31-year-old man was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

Denesh Dhanraj of Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and denied the charge which stated that, on May 25, 2019, at Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, he drove motor car PHH 4183 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Barial Hall.

According to statements presented by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, on the day in question, Dhanraj was driving his motor car on Avenue of Republic, proceeding north at a fast rate. As he approached the intersection, he collided with Hall who was crossing the road from east to west.

Hall was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was admitted. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Prosecutor Jeffers made no objection to bail under the conditions that Dhanraj lodges his passport to the court and reports every Monday to the Brickdam Police Station until the completion of his trial.

Magistrate McLennan released him on $500,000 bail and suspended his driver’s license until the completion of his trial.
Dhanraj is scheduled to make his next court appearance on November 14, 2019.
