ON Friday, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) held its 20th Anniversary celebrations. As part of the anniversary, the GPL donated approximately one million dollars to the different charities and developmental organizations in areas of health, education and sports around Guyana.
Public Relations Officer of GPL, Shevion Sears, said that GPL continues to explore the opportunities to make meaningful contributions to society, and such commitment was registered, approximately ten years ago, to provide yearly financial support to the Guyana Cancer Institute, in observance of Cancer awareness month.
Founder of the Step-by-Step Foundation which runs the sole Autism School in Guyana, Suraiya Ismail, stated that, the non-profit foundation needs financial help to support the day-to-day operation of the School.
She added that the timeliness of the donation will assist in recruiting teachers as the school requires additional teachers to cater to the learning needs of the students.
Representative form the Silver Shark Aquatic Swim Club stated that, the donation will go towards sporting activities for the club and expressed thanks to GPL for the contribution.
Berbice Chamber of Commerce representative said “donations are always needed to progress its mandate to the business community”.
In observance of GPL’s 19th Anniversary last year, the company furnished the Girl’s Dormitory at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre.
The Lethem Town Week Organising Committee is also a beneficiary GPL’s benevolence.
