A Corentyne man, who is a soon to be father, drowned on Wednesday after he took a plunge during a routine fishing trip at Topoo village, East Berbice, Corentyne.

Joseph Bownauth called ‘Lloyd,’  age 22, left his home for a fishing trip sometime after lunch on Wednesday along with two friends. The trio ventured to Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) pump station canal aback of his hometown of Belvedere.

Bownauth, who is a carpenter by profession, decided to try a new venture while hoping to make a good catch for his family.

According to relatives, when the trio arrived at the location, the young man decided to take a plunge from a bridge into the water around 15:00 hrs. His friends related that he dove into the canal, came up after a little while and started to “fight up” and soon after, he disappeared.
Known for his many “jokes,” his two friends thought he was “pulling one” however, several minutes passed and the man failed to emerge from the water. They immediately
raised and alarm and several men from the community jumped into the water, in search of  Bownauth.

Several other villagers joined the search party and an hour and a half later, they pulled up his lifeless body.  Eyewitnesses who spoke with this publication related that he did not have
any visible marks on his body.

The body was removed by undertakers and taken to Ramoo’s Funeral home. A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed on the body at the Fort Wellington Hospital.

The victim’s wife, Zureena Bacchus, who is in the first trimester of her pregnancy, was inconsolable and was in a state of shock at the funeral home, with tears streaming down her face.
Police are investigating the matter.
