Africo Selman is misplaced

Dear Editor
WITH reference to Rovin Singh’s “Africo Selman trying to politicise the horrific Friendship accident,” Guyana Chronicle, October 18, 2019. This PPP/C Member of Parliament is just another of the pit-level brand of her party’s rabble who has been seeking to garner political mileage out of a tragedy that has brought pain and grief to so many surviving families and to the nation, by extension; one is reminded as to how tenuous a hold on life we all have.

Of course, I agree with Singh’s description of Selman as being ‘disgraceful’, and that she is simply ‘singing for her supper.’ She is also callous, representing a known PPP/C position.
In fact, this particular PPP/C member, by such a self-serving position, is simply representing the worn-out political ideology of a party that continues desperately to assemble a credible electoral platform programme to counter the numerous successes that have been achieved by the President David Granger-led coalition.

They are clutching at every straw; their refuge can be only fake news, lies, deception and ‘alternative facts.’
The mere fact of her seeking to inject her senseless and dishonest accusation of ‘failed promises’ into a tragic situation, underlines the kind of people’s representative product that Selman really is. Like Singh, it ‘beats me.’

But, this is who Selman is, a totally misguided aspiring national leader on the wrong side of the political divide, for all the promises she may have been offered. Such a statement is proof that she has become immersed in the daily, stagnant backwaters of PPP/C opposition politics. There can be no moral and intellectual growth in such stagnancy.

It must be that Selman has regretted ‘jumping ship’ in the run-up to the 2015 historic vote. It is a decision which she made of her own volition, which she subsequently tried to blame on a very high-ranking member of the coalition. It reflected a person who just could not have waited for the desired change that had been in the making. It would seem that she was not prepared to work hard with her then colleagues for change; so she walked away from the part, a decision with which she must live.

However, she should cease being a part of a divisive political culture which she has embraced, that can only cause her a continuous lowering into the kind of anti-national and subversive political pit that has no moral or spiritual benefit for her as an individual, and the nation as a whole.

Carla Mendonca
