Lieutenant (Lt) Dishon Harris gained top honours and finished as the Best Graduating Student of the Junior and Command Staff Course Number 28.
Following closely was Lt Carlos Jordan who gained the runner-up award, while Lt (CG) Czerda Frank copped the Best Service Paper award.
In total, 15 Lieutenants graduated from the course recently.
During his congratulatory remarks to the graduates, Inspector General, Colonel Trevor Bowman charged them to be agents of change for the GDF and for Guyana.
“This course has equipped you with the knowledge and tools required for you to function as Sub-Unit commanders and Staff Officers and the necessary discharge of your duties. You have to become agents of change in order for us to be able to address pertinent issues of the GDF and this nation,” he observed.
“Becoming agents of change is not simply a process meant to benefit the force, but, by extension, Guyana and yourselves as individuals, ” he added.
Colonel Bowman noted that, with the anticipated rapid national development which is likely to result from the exploitation of Guyana’s significant hydrocarbon deposits, new challenges to national security, environmental protection and social cohesion will arise.
He exhorted the officers to look deeply at the regional and global geopolitical contexts in which the GDF will be advancing and urged that they engage in more documentation, and research writing.
“You have to broaden and deepen your understanding of regional and global geopolitical contexts. You must be aware of and understand natural disaster trends, humanitarian needs, climate change occurrences, societal upheavals, conflicts, emerging trade wars, and how they impact societies, particularly small developing nations like Guyana. As Guyana forges ahead, given the exploitation of its proven oil reserves, your development and progression must keep pace with all of this, in keeping with the constitutional responsibilities of the GDF.”
Offering guidance and encouragement to the officers, Col Bowman reminded them of the GDF’s Motto “Service” and urged that they apply it in their day-to-day lives in and out of uniform, as well as in their day-to-day duties.
He encouraged them to fully embrace and inculcate a sense of duty and responsibility, and to make the necessary sacrifices in order to build a resilient force.
“Be diligent. Approach your responsibilities with the highest degree of professionalism and take ownership of your appointments by being the best you can be,” he said.
The Chief-of-Staff, Officer and Ranks of the force congratulate the graduates of JCSC 28.
