MEMBERS of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) team, on Tuesday, received a cheque to the tune of $1M to assist with travelling expenses to Dubai in October. Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Annette Ferguson, presented the cheque to the team, which will be representing Guyana in a robotics competition in Dubai.
This is the first collaboration between STEM Guyana and the Ministry of Communities’ Green Generation Guyana (3G) Programme. At the simple handing over ceremony at the Ministry’s Fort Street, Kingston Office, Minister Ferguson said she was pleased with the level of collaboration between the 3G programme and STEM Guyana.

Minister Ferguson said the donation forms part of government’s commitment to invest in the development of young people, particularly in the areas of education and technology.
Co-Founder of STEM Guyana, Karen Abrams, expressed appreciation to the ministry for the financial donation. She noted that STEM Guyana has 50 clubs spread across the eight administrative regions in the country. Adding her voice, STEM Guyana Manager, Ima Christian, said the team is actively preparing for the competition and is thankful for the donation which will enable it to respect Guyana on the international stage.

Zooming in on the 3G Programme, Minister Ferguson said the Ministry of Communities has been working with students from across the country in the area of environmental protection. She explained that the 3G Programme is helping students to understand their roles and responsibilities with to caring for the environment.
“I am grateful to see young people taking up the mantle to be a part of the government’s agenda, in association with the green economy, and this launch will show you Government’s committment, not only to the programme but also to young people,” the minister said.
Deputy Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Communities, Jaigobin Jaisingh, noted that poor solid waste management remains a major problem, not only in Guyana, but across the world. The Guyanese Government, he added, has been spending billions of dollars to improve the management of solid waste in the country.
