PRIME Minister Moses Nagamootoo recently held separate talks with representatives of the Carter Center and the newly-accredited Finland Ambassador to Guyana.
Last Friday, Prime Minister Nagamootoo, who is also Leader of Government in the National Assembly, met the four-member Carter Center team, who are here on a week-long consultation with stakeholders in Guyana. The group is headed by Brett Lacy, the Center’s Associate Director. The team met with President David Granger on Monday. Before then, they held talks with Attorney General, Hon. Basil Williams, and Opposition Leader, Hon. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo engaged the Carter Center on a wide range of issues relating to the electoral process and constitutional reform in Guyana. He re-affirmed the government’s commitment to credible elections whenever the elections commission is ready to conduct these. Also at the meeting were Mrs. Anne Marlborough, the center’s lawyer on electoral laws; Nicolas Yorr, Carlos Valauzula, and Mrs. Deeann Ali, Personal Assistant to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister described the meeting as cordial and very fruitful.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Prime Minister Nagamootoo met His Excellency Pertti Ikone, the newly-accredited Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to Guyana. The career diplomat, who was Ambassador to Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, was a former Deputy Need of Mission in Caracas, Venezuela.
Prime Minister Nagamootoo briefed the Finnish Envoy on institutional arrangements for the oil industry, including the Natural Resources Fund and the Guyana Green State Development Strategy, for beneficial use of revenues. We also explained measures being taken in the field of sustainable development of natural resources and policies regarding agro-industrial investment.
Ambassador Ikonen shared with the prime minister experiences of Finland in social welfare policies, and the latest advances in the manufacturing industry. He expressed interest by Finland and financial investors in promoting joint ventures in Guyana, and look forward to future active collaboration between our countries. The ambassador and the prime minister were joined by Businessman Mr. Peter Abdool, and Mrs. Deeann Ali, Personal Assistant to the Prime Minister, respectively.
