THE driver of a truck that struck down and killed a pensioner on the Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) public road, on Thursday, has allegedly admitted to police that he was responsible for the accident. He is expected to be charged this week.

The pensioner, Christiani Bowling, 69, of Boodhoo Scheme, Parika, EBE was heading to the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) office at Parika to make a correction to his registration form when he was struck down.

His body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour.

Reports indicate that Bowling, who was riding a cycle and the truck GWW 4008 were travelling in the northern direction on the public road when the truck decided to overtake him.

This resulted in the left side of the truck’s tray connecting to Bowling’s bicycle handlebar, causing him to lose control. He fell between the truck’s left-side wheels and his head was crushed by the rear wheel.

Bowling was picked up and rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the driver is currently in police custody and is assisting them in their investigations.

He was placed on a $100,000 station bail on Saturday with the understanding that he will report to the station daily until the conclusion of investigations.

A file is expected to be sent for legal advice before charges are instituted.
