THIRTY-SIX-year-old miner, Anson Mendonca, was, on Tuesday August 6, 2019, placed on $150,000 bail, having been charged with stealing a caterpillar swing gear.
Mendonca appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It is alleged that, between April 1, 2018 and August 2, 2019 at Jack and Vieira Backdam, he stole a caterpillar swing gear valued $2.2M, property of Joseph Gonsalves.
Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield made no objection to bail and told the court that the stolen items were recovered at Charity on the Essequibo Coast in three fertilizer bags, in the presence of Mendonca. Information received indicated that Mendonca took the items there to sell them.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan placed Mendonca on $150,000 bail and transferred the matter to the Matthews’ Ridge Magistrate court for November 4, 2019.
