TO address the demand for job opportunities in the hinterland, the government is constructing a $200M Hinterland Green Enterprises Centre at the Bina Hill Institute in Annai, Region Nine.

The centre will accommodate 120 students from Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and 10 and will offer a curriculum in sustainable enterprise leadership and an enterprise support unit. It will also offer a two-year hands-on course in enterprise design and start-up, management, sustainability, and leadership, as well as access to business support services.
The 20,000 square feet two-story concrete and wooden structure will comprise eight classrooms, a modern computer and science laboratory and a large auditorium and lecture room.

Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Sydney Allicock, recently visited and inspected the ongoing works on the building and noted his satisfaction with the works done thus far. He was accompanied by Ministerial Adviser and Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Mervyn Williams, and Guyana’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, H.E David Pollard.

The North Rupununi was chosen for this project because it has the highest density of protected areas in Guyana. The location allows the proposed centre to influence the knowledge and technical expertise available at the Iwokrama Rainforest Centre. It is also a proposed area of community conservation.

The project is in keeping with His Excellency, President David Granger’s ‘green state’ development agenda. Its main objective is to stimulate economic growth by creating and supporting innovative leaders with the capacity and know-how to lead businesses in the challenging hinterland environment, whilst driving upstream demand for local products and services.

The project commenced in 2018 under the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs capital programme. It is being executed by JR Ranch Construction Inc. and is scheduled to be completed within a matter of weeks. (DPI)
