Mason fined for ganja possession

– said it was for medicinal purposes

A 27-year-old man’s explanation that the ganja found in his possession was being used for medicinal purposes resulted in him being fined $10,000.

The man, Keon Grenville, a mason of Phase One, East Ruimveldt, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday to answer to the charge of possession of narcotics.

It was alleged that Grenville had two grams of cannabis in his possession. In the court, he told the Chief Magistrate (ag) that he uses cannabis with urine to treat his two-year-old nephew’s asthma.

Particulars of the charge read that on June 7, 2019, at Phase One, East Ruimveldt, Grenville, had two grams of cannabis in his possession.

Grenville told the court that he bought the drug for this two-year-old nephew, who suffers from asthma. The cannabis, the man explained, would be used to make tea, which would be served with urine to his nephew to treat his asthma.

“It is not healthy to give a child urine to drink, then to boil the cannabis and give him as tea is very dangerous,” the magistrate told the defendant.

The Chief Magistrate (ag) fined Grenville $10,000 along with three weeks community service at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for committing to the offence. He was also ordered to subject himself to three sessions of counselling.
