Dear Editor,
A FRIEND of mine recently showed me Mr Andrew Parmanand’s letter, which appeared in the May 16, 2019 Stabroek News, Guyana Times and Kaieteur News. In the letter, I saw Mr Parmanand speaking about improvements at Uitvlugt Estate.
As a worker of Uitvlugt Estate, I agree that there have been some improvements, but that is not to say everything has improved for the better. Our estate a few days ago finished its first crop and surpassed its target by about 100 tonnes. I am happy, as it shows our estate is improving. But also, I am upset that the estate has a large area of canes which it sprayed with a ripener a few weeks ago; because of that, tonnes of sugar will be lost as the canes will not be useable when the second crop begins later this year.
In fact, editor, those canes may have to be cut and thrown away. So the estate would spend money to take care of the canes and then have to spend money to cut them only to throw them away. The managers are always telling us that money is not available, but then look how money is wasted.
I decided to write this letter, editor, as I want my estate to improve, but it can only do so if some of the wrong things come to an end. I hope that my letter could be published.
Regards
Deoram Rahamat
