CRICKET West Indies (CWI) president Ricky Skerritt has assured Guyanese cricket fans they will see the West Indies and India teams in action in August at the Guyana National Stadium.

This assurance was given during a meeting with Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo to discuss matters of mutual interest towards the development and growth of West Indies Cricket.

Accompanying Skerritt were CWI’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jonny Grave and CWI’s Logistics Manager Fawaaz Baksh. The Prime Minister’s team comprised the Director of Public Information, Imran Khan, and Coordinator of the Governance Office at the Office of the Prime Minister, Tamara Khan.

The India team is scheduled to tour the West Indies in August following the Cricket World Cup which will commence next week in England.

PM Nagamootoo again congratulated Skerritt on his new appointment as the president of the CWI.

“We are heartened by your elevation,” Prime Minister highlighted. Guyanese people are passionate and unwavering fans of West Indies cricket and look forward to annual international cricket in our country.”

He assured Skerritt of the government’s commitment towards the development and growth of cricket in both Guyana and the Caribbean.

The Prime Minister revealed to Skerritt that the Government of Guyana will shortly embark on a multi-million-dollar programme to upgrade dozens of grounds all across the country which will be used by various sports, especially cricket, the national sport.

Skerritt congratulated the government on this initiative and expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for his hospitality as well as his sincere congratulations on his new appointment.

He explained that while he is here for a very short visit, it was necessary for him to engage the Prime Minister on his vast knowledge and involvement in cricket.

“I came here to pay tribute to your longstanding cricket interest and you have always been a big cricket supporter,” Skerritt said.

“Cricket is so powerful, cricket brings people together,” Skerritt emphasised. He explained that he will be engaging the various cricket stakeholders in Guyana on the way forward for cricket governance in the country.

The two leaders also discussed matters related to the hosting of the Regional Under-19 tournament. (DPI )
