… Golden Jaguars go down 0-2 on penalty kicks
GOLDEN Jaguars played much their 39 minutes against Guadeloupe with four men after Deshawn Joseph was given a red card.
After a 3-3 scoreline at the end of extra time, they fell 0-2 on penalty kicks in their second game at the 2019 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in Mexico.
Following their spirited 4-8 defeat to Group D leaders El Salvador in their opening game, Guyana went into the game against Guadeloupe hoping for a victory.
Gael Geolier put the French West Indies side in the lead eight minutes into the game, but just before the close of the first period, Shane Luckie pulled one back for the Guyanese men.
Michael Wilson made it 2-1 in the 20th minute, to close the second stanza. However, in the final period, Alan Lefort netted just after resumption, but Guyana almost two minutes later, through Jamal Haynes, found the back of the net to reclaim the lead 3-2.
Guyans’s celebration, however, was short-lived, since Guadeloupe equalised a minute later off the boot of Benoit Zembama.
Luckie and Haynes both had several chances to put the game away, but their shots were either saved by Mikael Germaine in goal, or, came off the crossbar and goal post.
It came down to kicks from the penalty spot and Guadeloupe’s Ricardo Mezence was first up – his shot was good.
Jermine Grandison was up next and in his effort to level things in the tense penalty shootout he sent his shot off the mark.
Sebastien Hell made it 2-0 for Guadeloupe in the shootout, leaving Luckie in a ‘must-score’ situation to give Guyana a chance, but the Lindener was unsuccessful.
