The gunman who was killed during a confrontation with a security guard at a Queenstown,  Georgetown hotel earlier today, has been identified as serial bandit, rapist Nigel Wellington.

The 36-year old man was before the courts for a series of armed robbery offences and has been  charged in the past with raping his victims.He has made multiple appearances before the courts stretching as far back as 2011.

As recent as January  2018, Wellington, who was named in court documents as a miner , was placed before the courts on armed robbery charges.

According to the charges which were read to him in January last year, Wellington while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, and robbed a young couple of items and jewellery amounting to $820,000 on December 20, 2017 at Well Road, North Ruimveldt.

It was further alleged that Wellington on January 4, 2018 at North Ruimveldt robbed a 22-year-old woman of two gold rings along with a TV valued $184,000.

According to reports a 22-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted by the lone gunman, while her husband was also beaten by the bandit.

The unrepresented father of two was denied bail on all of the charges at the time.

In 2016 ,Wellington was also charged with armed robbery and sexually assaulting one of his victims.

The man was killed during a confrontation around 0400hrs today when he attempted to rob a chef at a hotel in Queenstown.

Wellington, who was armed with a handgun, was shot several times by the security guard. Wellington sustained wounds to his hands, torso and feet. He was reportedly identified by relatives.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
