THE mining authorities are investigating the death of a Pomeroon miner who died in yet another mining-pit cave-in, this time in the Mahdia mining district in the Potaro-Siparuni region.
Dead is Edward Daniels who hails from the Pomeroon. Reports are that Daniels and eight other miners were working in a pit when its walls collapsed. While the others were fortunate to be pulled out, Daniels was covered down by a layer of soil. His body was later extracted with an excavator.
Reports are that two of the miners remain hospitalised at the Mahdia Hospital and one of the men is said to be nursing a broken leg. Over the years, a number of persons lost their lives in mining-pit accidents, many of which have been occurring in the Potaro-Siparuni region. In many instances, the accidents have been attributed to unsafe practices.
Last September, miner Lennox Douglas, 33, of Canvas City, Wismar, Linden died after the pit he was working in caved in at Issano Backdam. That incident occurred less than a month after two other mining- related deaths at Mowasi Backdam, Konawaruk, Potaro.
A resident of Aishalton and another man , identified as Deon Sproston of Matthew’s Ridge , North West District, died in that incident.
