IN observance of Easter celebrations, children of the Lodge Nursery School paraded in their large school compound, showing off their hats to each other, and to parents who were present on Tuesday.

At the school’s Joseph Pollydore and Chapel Streets, Lodge, Georgetown location, the children showcased some spectacular Easter Bonnets with giant eggs and even one with a rabbit ear.

An Easter bonnet is any new or fancy hat worn as a Christian head-covering at Easter, by tradition.
It represents the tail-end of a tradition of wearing new clothes at Easter, in harmony with the renewal of the year and the promise of spiritual renewal and redemption.
The hats must have taken a long time to create and were a real showcase of creativity.
Head teacher of Lodge Nursery School, Donna Edghilo, said the hat show was within the Nursery School curriculum which allows for all national holidays and events to be ‘acknowledged’ in schools.

Adding that at the Nursery level the relevant observations are done to educate the children, the Head Mistress said in celebrating the activities the hat show was done on Tuesday and teachers and parents contributed to making the event significant.
Other than the religious significance, the Head Teacher said the children participated in hats that were made or purchased along with baskets of treats and other things supplied by teachers and parents.

“The snacks and other items given to the children mostly came from the teachers themselves. The support from parents was also appreciated,” she stated. The headteacher was pleased to inform the reporter that many of the hats were made by the teachers.
