Guyanese in New York celebrate 49th Republic Anniversary

NEARLY 300 persons in New York were given a taste of Guyanese culture and festivity, at the celebration of Guyana’s 49th republic anniversary, hosted by friends of the consulate.
The spectacular cultural event took place on Friday, February 15, 2019, under the auspices of Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, Ambassador Rudolph Michael Ten-Pow and Consul General of Guyana to New York, Barbara Atherly.

Attending, too, were Ambassador to the United States of America, Dr. Riyad Insanally; the wife of Mr. Ten-Pow; CARICOM Consul Generals of Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago; Acting Consul General of Jamaica and representatives from St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The evening took the theme: ‘Celebrate Mash 49 with Unity and Pride’ and was emceed by Kishore Seunarine of the film ‘Echoes from the Plantation.’

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the programme showcased the six different races of Guyana through dance and the spoken word.

There was also a cultural parade celebrating the uniqueness of the country’s peoples and a medley of Guyanese folk songs led by the famous drummers, Menes de Groit and Akoyaw Rudder.

Meanwhile, faith leaders of Amerindian, Christian, Hindu and Muslim religions conducted the invocation.
In the midst of the celebration, the consul general guided the audience waving their ‘Arrowheads’ as Ambassadors Ten-Pow; staff of the mission and consulate and other guests danced into the reception area for a taste of Guyana’s cuisine.

The guests also sampled delicacies as many expressed interest in Guyana’s next national event, even as they look forward to the country’s grand 50th republic celebration.
