Oil will be a game changer, says Gaskin

MINISTER of Business Dominic Gaskin has assured that the newly established oil and gas sector will create more jobs for Guyanese.

On a recent podcast programme with opposition Member of Parliament Juan Edghill, the minister said the government has created a local content policy which is in its final stage of drafting.

This, he explained, will benefit many locals, once implemented.
Whilst the opposition MP contended that, “the Guyana Office for Investment (Go-Invest) has failed the nation,” Minister Gaskin refuted this.
He said that Go-Invest has been institutionally strengthened with the establishment of policies such as legislation to deal with what he called the free- for-all economy which Guyana had enjoyed pre- 2015.

Minister Gaskin said that with the putting in place of the Anti-Money Laundering Terrorism and Financing Act legislation, Guyana has tightened its systems, allowing for more accountability and transparency.

The minister opined that a more investment-friendly tax regime would be needed to make Guyana more investment-friendly, and noted that this is being pursued.
He added that the administration has managed to bring the issue of public security, piracy and crime to significantly low rates. These are just some key issues that affect potential investors.

The government, Minister Gaskin added, sees the issue of better infrastructure, value-added sector, tourism and better education as frontier policies for this administration as it continues to work on measures designed to ease doing business and enhance the investment climate.
