QUEEN’S College is out to prove that they are good enough to compete against the best junior cricket teams in the capital and their opening victory in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Noble House Seafoods Generation Next U-19 100-over cricket competition might have proved their capability.
The ace high school’s cricket team defeated GNIC by six wickets and skipper Navindra Persaud is elated with the performance.
The GYO club cricketer said that he and his schoolmates hope to return QC to its past glory – to a point in time when the school was well respected in the cricket fraternity.
“’I’m very sure we are the underdogs of this competition and that’s not an issue. We have nothing to lose, but we have a lot to gain from playing. As a team we have been getting a lot of support from the school and affiliates so we don’t want to disappoint and we hope that this batch of cricketers can restore Queen’s College to being as dominant in cricket as we were before.”
FOCUSSED
Persaud said that the players are pumped up and are very excited to play and win their games.
“Taking us lightly is a risk …. No doubt we are coming up against some big teams in our group, but right now we are focussed, fearless and we have a lot of talented players waiting to make their mark.”
In their opening game, it was Persaud who exploded with an all-round effort. GNIC won the toss and batted first, but they could not get past the off-spin of Persaud who picked up 4-22 from 6.3 overs and pacer Anthony Singh, who cleaned up the tail with 3-9 from six overs.
Only A. Sarwan 21 (3×4) and G. Benjamin (16 runs 3x4s) reached double figures as the home team fell for 78 in 24.3 overs.
In reply, Persaud, who started off his innings with a pair of sixes, finished with a game-high 33 runs (3×4, 3×6) while T. Allen added 25 (3×4, 1×6) to push their team to 80-4 in 12 overs.
Dwayne Dick led GNIC’s attack with 3-30 from 5.5 overs.
