A fire on Thursday afternoon at Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara has left a two-year old child dead.

Reports are that around 14:00hrs, the fire was observed at a bedroom at the top flat of the building which stood opposite the National Agricultural Research Extension Institute (NAREI) compound.

The child’s grandmother was reportedly at the bottom flat of the building when the fire broke out in the bedroom.

An eyewitness told the Guyana Chronicle that neighbours responded to the scene but the fire was beyond their efforts. Attempts were made to retrieve the child from the bedroom but neighbours could not contend with the smoke.

Members of the Guyana Fire Service responded to the fire and managed to contain the blaze to the house.
