YOUNG Chitram Vinesh Ayana, who was diagnosed with cancer of the liver, has received assistance from the Saving Hands Emergency Aid, Inc., (SHEA) to travel abroad for treatment.

Chitram, accompanied by his parents, left for the United States of America (USA) where he has been admitted into a hospital and now in receipt of treatment for cancer.
According to SHEA, the boy was in a critical state and needed urgent medical attention, which was not available in Guyana.

The organisation said Chitram had mild hepatomegaly with malignant neoplastic etiology (enlarged liver due to cancer) and it was spreading rapidly; already reaching the right psoas muscle and left anterior abdominal wall. There was also a lesion seen in the greater curvature in the stomach, which had metastasised to the right femur (thighbone and pelvic bone), very close to the lungs.

The cost for outpatient treatment and pain management was approximately US$100 per day, a cost which the family could not afford.
“He left on Saturday night…. The total cost of the treatment has not been calculated as yet because this type of treatment could last for more than three years,” said a representative of SHEA, Sita Sugrim, in an invited comment.

The foundation has been able to accumulate just over US$13,000 so far to fund the lad’s treatment and intends to continue its effort to acquire more funds.
“We would like to thank EVERYONE who offered a helping hand in getting Chitram to this point. Whether you donated, prayed, sent messages of hope, offered him your seat to rest, or shared his story; you have made this possible for him,” said a member of the organisation
The organisation thanked all the local doctors, nurses and volunteers who contributed towards the efforts made to save 13-year-old Chitram.
