Funds allocated for UG sewerage system, pump house

THE National Assembly recently approved $448M for projects at the University of Guyana, including a sewerage system and pump house.

The University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) had in the past complained of deplorable toilet facilities at the Turkeyen campus and had even moved to close two of them until they were fixed.

During a recent sitting of the National Assembly, opposition Member of Parliament Pauline Sukhai raised the issue of the university’s “old and faulty” sewerage system.
Education Minister Nicolette Henry responded that Sukhai’s comments were noted, but that since the university is a subvention agency, she was unsure what the body would choose to do with its money in 2019.

Meanwhile, the funds approved would also cater for the provision of buildings and electrical upgrades.

Another $60M was approved for the construction of a building at the university’s Berbice campus.

The two sums were approved under the post-secondary/tertiary education section of the national budget.
