ARCHERY Guyana’s Outdoor Recurve Championship Finals kicked off at 12:00hrs on Sunday December 16, 2018 at the GNS ground, Carifesta Avenue.
While the weather was not a sunny forecast the championship displayed exciting and competitive matches between the archers.
First event was the women semi-final match between Narda Mohamed and Samira Duncan in which the latter secured a spot in the final against Shereeda Yusuf who benefited from a bye, due to a no-show from Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon.
The final match after an even start was dominated by Duncan. She claimed the gold medal, Yusuf silver and Mohamed bronze.
The Women Cadet event was a two-person match which was dominated by Talitha Kissoon. She won every end to secure the gold medal with Jessica Callender copping the silver.
The men then took to the field in the quarter-finals, with Sean Duncan and Jeewanram Persaud giving onlookers a thrilling match where they both tied with five points each, thus giving onlookers a chance to witness a one-arrow shoot-off for a tie-breaker. Duncan took the opportunity to show his dominance and secured his spot in the semi-final.
In the other quarter-final matches, Anand Mangra was defeated by Umasankar Madray 2-6 with the quarter-final match being effectively a semi-final, with Nicholas Hing losing to Robert Singh, resulting in Singh advancing to final, due to a no-show by Ryan McKinnon and Latchman Singh the other quarter-finalists.
In the semi-final, Madray overcame a poor start to dominate Duncan in the last 3 rounds to secure the win and a spot in the final.
In the final, Duncan got past Nicholas Hing 6-2 to secure bronze medal with Singh displaying calm and brillance to overcome the favoured Madray 6-2, ending the men’s individual with Singh taking gold, Madray silver an Duncan bronze.
For the team shoot-offs, Singh and Mohamed dominated as they took the gold medal, leaving team Mangra and Duncan with silver and Madray and Yusuf the bronze.
