REGION Seven’s Annai picked up their first win in the KFC Goodwill Football tournament by a 3-0 margin over Linden’s Christianburg Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) when the tournament continued at the Ministry of Education ground.

A cold afternoon in Georgetown, the men from the Hinterland played with fire to avenge their loss on Saturday to Trinidad and Tobago’s Shiva Hindu Boys’ College.

They were by far the superior team when things got going at minutes to six, but difficulties beyond the organisers’ control again forced a late start.

However, Annai got the ball rolling early, with some skilful use of the midfield. They were able to create their first few changes within minutes of the game.

Their first goal followed not long after – a stunner from Orville Daniels in the 5th minute.

As the game went on, Annai team were too much for their Linden counterparts, mixing wing play with balls through the middle of the park to overwhelm their opponents.

It didn’t help that the CWSS goalkeeper was a bit sloppy at times. The second goal was scored after he tried to push the ball out of the area but instead pushed it onto a rushing Niazz Mohammed (12th) who slammed it against the crossbar and it rebounded into the goal.

At the end of the half, CWSS looked the more frustrated team, as their chances at goal were few and far and their opponents seemed to have free rein.

On resumption, Linden side picked up their attacking spunk but were not able to penetrate the Annai net.

The third goal for the hinterland side came from Mohammed, whose swirling shot from 25 yards out was too much of a rocket for the CCWS keeper; even though it was aimed just a foot above his head.

Up to press time, the second match between Shiva and East Coast’s Annandale Secondary was at 0-0.
