A lawful obligation

Dear Editor,

The fact that there were tens of billions of dollars granted to businesses and related types allied to the former PPP/C administration; the false accusation that the coalition government has burdened the nation with in excess of 200 new taxes – a figment of Bharat Jagdeo’s deceptive persona; and promising in its party Local Government Elections programme that there would be no new taxes in the city, explains fully Bharat Jagdeo’s position on paying one’s fair share of taxes.

Since it is well known that his “200 new taxes’’ claim is as false as his persona, one can perhaps safely conclude that it was a crooked plan to get the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to either slow its aggressive posture against tax dodgers that became institutionalised in this country, or to bring about a cessation of some kind of its exercise. But neither has occurred, nor will ever be. Not by a GRA led by Commissioner General, Godfrey Statia!

Taxes, a most important form of revenue, are the life blood of any country’s development programmes. It is one of the main funding sources. Jagdeo knows this only too well. Instead, it was about excusing his friends and cronies from their fair share of taxes, while the mass of state employees fulfilled their obligation.

All Guyanese, who are eligible, especially those with private enterprises have a lawful obligation to pay taxes in accordance with their holdings. This is lawful, as in any other Country.

Dillon Goring
