GROS ISLET, St Lucia,(CMC) – Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul reached another landmark in his first class career as Guyana Jaguars kicked off their bid for a fifth straight title with a 125-run victory over Windward Islands Volcanoes on the final day here Sunday.
Resuming at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground on 54 for two in pursuit of an improbable 348 for victory, Volcanoes folded for 224, with 20-year-old left-hander Alick Athanaze top-scoring with a patient unbeaten 64.

Clinton Pestano received the Player-of-the Match award for his fine allround performance

Opener Taryck Gabriel converted his overnight 33 into 57 while wicketkeeper Denis Smith struck 38 and Kavem Hodge, 32.
Permaul snatched three for 56 to reach 450 first class wickets, ending the contest with a six-wicket haul.
Another Berbice player Clinton Pestano was named Player-of-the-Match for his all-round showing in the match.

Fast bowlers Romario Shepherd (2-20), Chris Barnwell (2-36) and Clinton Pestano (2-49) all supported with two wickets each.
Gabriel and Hodge extended their overnight third wicket stand to 58, to give Volcanoes some impetus early in the day.
The right-handed Gabriel faced 124 balls in 2-¾ hours at the crease and counted seven fours while Hodge struck five fours off 49 deliveries.

Hodge and Gabriel were both knocked over by Permaul – two of three wickets to fall for 26 runs in the space of 52 balls – to leave Volcanoes struggling on 114 for five.
However, Athanaze came to his side’s rescue, producing an innings that required 137 deliveries, 2-½ hours and included five fours and two sixes.
Crucially, he anchored an 88-run sixth wicket stand with Smith who faced 68 balls and struck six fours.

The partnership propelled the hosts to 202 for five, further raising hopes of at least saving the match but once Smith perished, the last five wickets fell for just 20 runs
