FOLLOWING a recent fire that destroyed everything they owned, the Gordon family of Blue Berry Hill, Wismar, Linden are holding on to some form of hope after a magnanimous contribution from regional officials spearheaded by Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira.

On Friday, the family of six received an overwhelming amount of items that will assist them in remaining clothed and fed for a few weeks, and most importantly to commence the construction of their home.

Figueira, on behalf of the ‘Caring for Others’ non-governmental organisation (NGO), donated a month’s supply of groceries as well as clothing and mattresses to the distraught family.

He also solicited donations from the Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who in collaboration with a businessman in Linden, donated over 700 blocks to the family and loads of sand to commence the reconstruction of their house. Out-going Mayor Waneka Arindell and Deputy Wainwright Bethune also donated a bale of cement to the family. Regional Executive Officer Orrin Gordon has pledged to donate several zinc sheets to the family.

This is the second family within a month that has lost their home to fire and received overwhelming assistance. Figueira said that he is very happy he could have made a contribution and moreover, is most pleased with the involvement of the officials, his friends and residents of the community, who started the self-help effort towards the rebuilding of the home.

He has expressed the hopes that the home is rebuilt for Christmas and before the matriarch of the home, who is not aware of the tragedy and is not in the best of health, returns home.
