NEW Zealand concluded their ICC Women’s World T20 tournament with a commanding win over the Irish women on Saturday.
The match, which New Zealand won by 8 wickets, also concluded the 2018 Guyana leg of the competition.
Winning the toss, Ireland opted to take first strike but did not get the start that they needed after Cecila Joyce departed for 1 with the score on 11.
Clare Shillington then joined forces with Gabby Lewis and the two took the score to 30 before the former left, being bowled by Leigh Kasperek after scoring 12 from 22. Lewis took up the role as the hitter and flourished in the partnership.
Isobel Joyce departed after two balls for a duck; bringing Laurna Delany to the crease and between her and Lewis, they put together a 39-run partnership before Delany departed for 12 (22). Three balls later, the aggressive Lewis departed for 36 (32).
After that, no other substantial partnerships got going as the Irish crumbled to 79/9 at the end of 20.
Three wickets for Kasperek and two each for Amelia Ker and Lea Tahuhu did the damage.
New Zealand, smelling blood, began the hunt early with Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine both having their way in the powerplay to post 74 runs.
Devine took up the strike role, clobbering her 50 off 21 balls and when she departed the score was 61. Bates departed for 11 (12) but by then the damage had already been done and Captain Amy Satterhwaite (10 off of 10) and Katey Martin (1 from 1) brought the game home.
There was a wicket each for Eimear Richardson and Delany as the ‘White Ferns’ completed their last match
