Dear Editor,
I AM a pessimist.
I have kept abreast of the new government over the past two years because I voted for change. Even though in my opinion, there has not been enough progress with the retrieval of Guyana’s stolen money and the appropriate corrupt individuals being revealed and prosecuted.

I wonder why is that?
What I am very impressed with is the changes and progress at the Ministry of Education. Recently, a mobile clinic was launched to deal with a spectrum of problems our children have that prevent them from taking full advantage of their schooling. From struggling in school, either because of problems at home, learning difficulties e.g., undiagnosed dyslexia, a general lack of support from family and their community.

I have not failed to notice that this one step is significant and demonstrates the Minister of Education’s modern and grassroots strategy. We have to start identifying our educational problems and this initiative goes a long way in solving one of them on an individual level with counsellors. I wasn’t a fan of this minister, but through her continued actions that I have seen on the news that include programmes that get teenage mothers back into educational institutes such as Carnegie School of Home Economics, and the fact that children all over Guyana have benefited directly from her policies and interventions, I have to retract my negative rhetoric.

She even leads by example when it comes to life-long learning, as I heard that she has just attained a doctorate (PhD). Where does she find the time?
I have to concede, I am now an optimist and a fan of Dr. the Hon. Nicolette Henry.
