THE Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) recovered from a deadly spell of off spin bowling from Dwain Dick to register an 18-run victory against the Georgetown Eco Champs in a low-scoring clash in the GCA/Friends of Cricket Hundred Overs U-17 tournament on Wednesday at the GNIC ground.
MYO won the toss and batted first. They had some success early with national U-15 captain Zeynul Ramsammy playing some exquisite shots. The number three batsman finished with a match high 32 runs (6x4s) and featured in a 52-run third-wicket partnership with Tomani Caesar (15 runs 3x4s).
The partnership ended after Dick got into the ‘spin of things’. The national U-17 cricketer, who was the second-change bowler, stifled the batsmen in his early overs, before he began taking their wickets. He grabbed the wicket of Ramsammy in his fourth over—his second maiden– while he grabbed a wicket each in his fifth and sixth overs, two in his seventh over and the last in his ninth over to finish with 6-22 from 8.1 overs.
Pacer Bryion Bowen and left-arm-spinner Sameer Hussain also grabbed two wickets each to restrict MYO to 111 in 25.1 overs.
In reply, Eco Champs were pegged back early as their first four wickets, that of Mitra Dhanraj (1), Mohamed Jameer (09), Dick (2) and Daniel Roberts (7), fell for 26 runs, due to good bowling from the opening pair of Isai Thorne and Elnathan Suknandan.
After the fast bowlers exited, the spinners took control with Krsna Singh and Abdul Ramsammy cleaning up the middle and the tail.
Middle- order batsman Bryion Bowen (16) and lower order batsmen Joshua Thomas (15) and Keon Wright (17) made the clash exciting, but they could not hold on to their wickets.
Singh finished with 3-12 from five overs, while Thorne, Suknandan and Ramsammy supported with two wickets each.
