A 36-year-old businessman was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for discharging his licensed firearm at another man.

It is alleged that Simon “Kenno” Hussain on September 23, 2018, at 111 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro River, discharged a loaded firearm at Shahonan “Biggs” Monderson with intent to maim, disfigure, or cause grievous bodily harm.

Hussain pleaded not guilty to the charge while his attorney made an application for bail on the grounds that her client acted in self defence and was attacked by Monderson.

According to the facts presented in court by Prosecutor Simone Payne, on the day in question about 00:20hrs, Monderson and Hussain were at a bar at the Mahdia landing when a heated argument ensued between the two men.

Payne noted that Hussain pulled out his licensed firearm and discharged a round at Monderson, hitting him in the left shoulder. Monderson then jumped onto Hussain and took away the firearm. Bail was objected to on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge. The Chief Magistrate remanded Hussain to prison until October 15 when he will make his next appearance at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
