Guyana to open Americas Challenge Series against Colombia today

THE ‘Green Machine’, Guyana’s national rugby team, will play their first game of the Americas Challenge Series today against the host country, Colombia.

Guyana’s Ryan Gonsalves poses with the Americas Challenge Series winners’ trophy.

Guyana is the only Caribbean nation at the tournament in Colombia, which also features Paraguay (38) and Mexico (53) and marks the first time the Green Machine will be facing teams outside of the Rugby Americas North (RAN) region in the 15s format.

Trans-regional matches will also be played in the second round with Guyana meeting Paraguay and Colombia playing against México on Wednesday 29th.

The final round, on Sunday, September 1, will see Mexico clash with Guyana, and Colombia versus Paraguay in the closing match. The winners will be the team accruing the most tournament points.

The team will be captained by Ryan Gonsalves and will also feature Jason Tyrell, Allain Crawford, Rondel McArthur, Kevon David, Grantley Williams, Richardson Staglon, Jamal Angust, Cloyd Prowell, Lancelot Adonis, Avery Corbin, Claudius Butts and Godfrey Broomes.

Also making the squad selected by the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) are David Garnett, Joseph Rahaman, Cyon Kitt, Ahmad Isaacs, Vallon Adams, Walter George, Sean Phillips, James Osborne, Daniel DeAbreu, Toby David, Selwin Henry and O’Neil Charles.

Prior to departure, Gonsalves said some the younger players in Guyana “are now making their debut into the 15s side, so it’s going to be challenging, but we’re going to have to make it work. Those teams that we are playing against will be very good technical teams and if we don’t play our ‘A-game’, we’re going to punish on the day. So we are going to go out there and get clicking from the first whistle.”

Guyana are currently the highest-ranked Caribbean country in World Rugby, with the latest Ranking released by the sport’s world governing body showing the ‘Green Machine’ at 46, while Trinidad and Tobago sit at 49 and Jamaica 65.
