A FORTY-year-old farmer and former policeman was killed in an alleged hit-and-run accident on the Kilmarnock Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice early Monday morning.
Dead is Marlon Cox of Tain Settlement, East Berbice, Corentyne. The lifeless body of the father of three was discovered on the northern carriageway at around 03:30hrs with injuries to its right hand and head, which are consistent with that of a motor vehicular accident, police said in a release.

At the time of his demise, Cox was making his way to a relative’s home a short distance away to spend the night as it had gotten late and transportation was unavailable.

According to the man’s employer who is popularly called ‘Tall boy,’ he was at his Phillipi, Corentyne Berbice home when Cox came by at 21:30hrs and spent some time. He noted as it got late he suggested that he stayed over but Cox related he will try to get transportation or he will stay at a relative nearby. “We went to the horse race but I left and come home, around 9:30 -10 time he (Cox) stopped by last night. I had some friends over and we were having a lil drink and then he left. I walked him out and then come in and close up till this morning I get the news,” Tall Boy related.

The news of the man’s death came as shock to him. Cox has been described as a hard worker. Meanwhile, the man’s partner Savitri Collace told the Guyana Chronicle “Marlon” left home 04:30hrs in the morning for the backdam but returned around noon and left for the horse race at Number 36 Village. She explained that she was under the impression he spent the night at a relative’s home until she received the dreadful news of his demise.

Based on the injuries and the accident scene, relatives and residents believe Cox was struck by a truck which made no attempt to render assistance. “They just hit him and leave him to die, they could ah just pick he up and help he, he is a good man that trouble nobody,” Collace said. She is hoping that police find the person responsible for her husband’s death so the family can get justice. Police are investigating.
