THE Guyana Olympic Association’s (GOA) Olympic Day Open Doubles badminton tournament commenced on Friday at the National Gymnasium.
The opening night saw action in the Men’s Open Doubles, Ladies’ Open round-robin Doubles and the Men’s Open consolation Doubles tournament.
National Ladies’ junior and senior champion Priyanna Ramdhani, who just graduated from Marian Academy, and her partner Greer Jackson won the Ladies’ Open Doubles title when they defeated Christina Kumar and Shivannie Persaud 21-9, 21-8, Jayde DaSilva and Stephanie Sagar 21-14, 21-5 and Ayanna Wickham-Watson and Emily Ramdhani 21-8, 21-7.
Occupying second place were Shivannie Persaud and Christina Kumar who defeated
Jayde DaSilva and Stephanie Sagar 21-13, 21-15, and Ayanna Wickham-Watson and Emily Ramdhani 21-16, 22-20.
In third place were Ayanna Wickham-Watson and Emily Ramdhani who defeated: Jayde DaSilva and Stephanie Sagar 21-3, 21-7.
In the Open Men’s Doubles, National champion Narayan Ramdhani, who is on vacation from his Badminton Scholarship Programme in Canada, teamed up with Jonathan Mangra to reach the final after they defeated Dr Nicholas Waldron and Gokarn Ramdhani 21-10, 21-8 in the first round.
At the end of the first match in the semi-finals against Javid Rahaman and Easa Sanichara, they were awarded a walkover after Rahaman twisted his ankle with the score at 1-0.
Other matches played in the Open Men’s Doubles were:
Round 1: Javid Rahaman and Easa Sanichara trounced Sekhar Mallampati and Mahendra Sharma 21-7, 21-9.
Ronald Chang Yuen and Akili Haynes (who also graduated from Marian Academy) defeated Johann Waldron and Isaac Mallampati 21-10, 21-15.
Marlon Chung and Darrell Carpenay thrashed upcoming junior stars Matthew Beharry and Vikash Mootoo 21-6, 21-4.
In the semi-finals, Marlon Chung and Darrell Carpenay bettered Ronald Chang Yuen and Akili Haynes 21-16, 21-15.
Other results saw Gokarn Ramdhani and Dr Nicholas Wadron crush Johann Waldron and Isaac Mallampati in the final 21-9, 21-10.
The final in the Open Men’s Doubles was scheduled for yesterday.
