WHEN the Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Cycling Championships got underway yesterday, Team Evolution’s Raynauth Jeffrey smashed the National Individual Time Trial (TT), giving his team their first Individual TT.

Meanwhile, UK-based Claire Fraser-Green was also successful in her defence with a splendid effort, dominating the Women’s Time Trial for a record seventh title.
Briton John was victorious in the Juniors category, and Jaikaran Sukai made a welcome return to form by winning the Masters title.

Raynauth Jeffrey defends his National Time Trials title in record-breaking fashion.

Jeffrey, after a stint on the USA Circuit, had no mercy on his competitors crossing the line in 28 minutes 36 seconds, while his nearest challenger (Andrew Hicks of United We Stand CC) was over a minute behind in 29 minutes 24 seconds. Hicks’ teammate Briton John was third in 29 minutes 34 seconds.

John was the top juvenile with Ajay Gopilall (34 minutes 32 seconds) second while Movan Fraser (34 minutes 52 seconds) settled for third.
Fraser-Green barely had any competition clocking 40 minutes 12 seconds to cop the top podium spot with Shanieka Teixeira second in 46 minutes 59 seconds.

Continental’s Jaikarran (32 minutes 42 seconds) beat out Stephen Fernandes (32 minutes 57 seconds) and Paul Thomas (33 minutes 45 seconds) to cop the Masters title.
The Time Trials were held on the Soesdyke.Linden Highway with the starting point at the Yarrowkabra Police Outpost. The cyclists proceeded to a 10km mark on the highway before finishing at the point of origin.

Today, the Masters, Juveniles, Juniors and Ladies will pedal off from the National Sports Commission (NSC) on Homestretch Avenue and proceed to Timehri before returning to the Soesdyke Junction from where the Masters and Juniors will head up to Long Creek then return to the point of origin.
