THE driver of this car was reportedly hit from behind and ended up crashing off the Demerara Harbour Bridge late Friday afternoon.
Fortunately, the vehicle landed on one of the pontoons under bridge. The driver was rescued by commuters and other drivers and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment. Up to press time he was listed as being in a stable condition. At the time of the accident the car was heading east along the bridge.
According to reports, there was no major disruption of traffic following the accident, as shortly after the driver was lifted out of his vehicle traffic resumed on the bridge.
Authorities at the bridge, speaking with the Guyana Chronicle around 7pm, said that they were awaiting the end of the ‘rush hour’ traffic to remove the vehicle from off the pontoon. There have been several accidents and other mishaps at the bridge over the years.
