TORONTO, Canada – Unlike last year when they were upstaged by underdogs Steelcity Warriors, Assassins rebounded to take top honours when the second annual Apollo Cricket Club Super Bash six-a-side five-over round-arm softball knockout competition came off with a bang last recently at Keele Top, North York, Toronto.
Originally set to be played on Saturday May26, the organisers were forced to postpone the tournament to the following day due to the inclement weather. This however did not deter the fans who turned out in their numbers to witness 10 teams battle for supremacy.
In the end it was Assassins who came out victorious, whipping Canje After Six by a whopping 44 runs in the five-over affair.
Led by a thunderous unbeaten 71 from former Guyana Under-19 player Farouk Hussein, whose knock included an incredible 10 sixes and 29 not out from former Guyana captain Damodar Daesrath, Assassins reached a formidable 109 without loss in their five overs.
Canje After Six could only muster 65 for three when their five overs expired with Yadram Bojh hitting a top-score of 35.
The semi-final encounters saw Canje After Six getting the better of Apollo while Assassins won from Apollo 2.
The fund-raising effort attracted some 10 teams with the winners taking away $1000C and the Canadian Surplus trophy while the losing finalist collected $200 and the Caribbean Lime trophy.
At the presentation ceremony, Hussein copped awards for man-of-the-match and Most Valuable Player in the final, Daesrath for scoring the most runs (109) in the tournament (a food voucher compliments of Tropical Nights Restaurant); Troy Gobin for being the best catcher (food voucher from Tropical Nights Restaurant) and Assassins for the highest team score.
Among the sponsors were Canadian Surplus Guyana (Prem Punwasi), Caribbean Heat Restaurant (Alex), Caribbean Lime (Gangaram), JDG Tooling, 24-hour Glass System (Sham), T & S Enterprise (Tyrone Madramootoo), IR Construction (Iqbal Rahaman), Dant Powder Coating (Andrew), Tropical Nights Restaurant (Nigel), S&G Glass Insulation, Suraj Singh & Hamlet (Gordon) and Trophy Stall Canada (Roger Sunich).
Organiser, Daesrath is expressing sincere thanks to all those responsible for the successful staging of the tournament and also disclosed that an Inter-county competition is slated for the same venue in July while a similar competition will also take place in August. (Frederick Halley)
