Enmore man to face murder charge today

– after eighteen years on the run

Deonarine Bhikari will today appear in court to answer to the capital offence committed against Daniel Singh back in May 2000.

The chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions on Thursday recommended that the police charge the man with murder committed on Singh at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. The advice of the DPP has pleased relatives of the deceased, especially his children who were all young at the time he was murdered. For them, justice has been served although they still feel the pain of living without a father who, prior to his death, was responsible for sending them to school, cooking their meals and washing their clothes. Deonarine Bhikari was arrested on Sunday by police after they received intelligence that he was at the home of his sister. This was after the man was said to be in hiding over in neighbouring Venezuela for the duration of his run from justice.

Persons in the community have contended that he returned home due to the harsh economic conditions in Venezuela and with the hope that the matter had been forgotten. To date though, the man has not confessed to the crime for which he is being accused, although the children of the deceased who witnessed him chopping their father, provided statements to that effect. There were also other persons from the community who provided statements which corroborated the children’s accounts. Deonarine Bhikari is expected to appear before Magistrate Peter Hugh.
