Deonarine Bhikari was on Friday morning remanded to prison for the murder of Daniel Singh which occurred in May 2000 at Enmore,East Coast Demerara.
The 53-year-old man of Logwood,Enmore appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
During the proceedings, Singh’s children and other relatives were at court to witness the man’s first appearance. Bhikari was remanded to prison until June 15 when the matter would be called again for report. The prosecution told the court that the file is still incomplete.
Deochan Singh ,the eldest child of the victim said the family has been waiting for justice for his father’s death for years.
The chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Thursday recommended that the police charge the man with murder committed on Singh.
The accused was arrested on Sunday by police after the ranks received intelligence that he was at the home of his sister. This was after the man was said to be in hiding over in neighbouring Venezuela for the duration of his run from the police.
Persons in the community have contended that he returned home due to the harsh economic conditions in Venezuela and with the hope that the matter had been forgotten. (Leroy Smith)
